Johnny Cueto was handed his sixth win of the season on Saturday despite giving up five runs on five hits and four walks over six innings against the Royals. The Royals’ futility and warmth of his own team’s bats is what gave Cueto a positive result in an otherwise dismal effort. He’s given up eight, four, and five runs in his last three starts, and his dominant May is quickly being forgotten. Knowing what he’s capable of makes it tempting to hold on to the hurler, but watching him struggle through a third straight start means it may be time to cut him loose until he gets hot again.

Johnny Cueto allowed three runs over five innings as part of a no-decision in a loss to the Pirates on Saturday night. He allowed five hits and four walks while striking out four. Cueto struggled early on Saturday, giving up three runs over the first two innings, but settled down to throw three scoreless innings after that. He got a no-decision after Francisco Cordero blew the save in the ninth. Cueto needed 102 pitches to get through five innings, so he obviously wasn’t as sharp as he’d like. The young right-hander now has a 5.06 ERA over three starts this season. Cueto still isn’t being very pitch-efficient, needing 103 pitches to get through five innings. He allowed five hits and four walks while striking out four. His next start comes Friday vs San Diego. He’s 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA in his career against the Padres.

Johnny Cueto yielded four runs over five innings as part of a no-decision in an extra-inning win over the Marlins on Monday night. 33 of his 112 pitches were thrown in a three-run third inning in which he allowed four hits, a walk, a balk, and a wild pitch. Cueto was in line for a loss before Orlando Cabrera’s two-run homer in the top of the sixth. Monday’s start goes down the books as a no-decision for Cueto, but the biggest positive to take away from this outing is the one walk. Even that, may have been the byproduct of a free-swinging Florida lineup than anything else considering his high pitch count. Cueto has been all over the map in his first two starts of the season but has yet to garner a decision. He’s allowed six runs on 14 hits and four walks in 11 innings and has yet to show the upside we all know he possesses. Cueto makes a second appearance in Week 2 (April 12-18) and that comes on Saturday at Pittsburgh. He is 6-2 with a 3.72 ERA against the Pirates in eight career starts with 48 strikeouts in 46 innings. Cueto hasn’t pitched like it yet but is a solid option in mixed Fantasy leagues. (Rotoworld, Rotowire, CBS Sports)

Cueto racked up a high pitch count in the early going and never seemed to get comfortable on the mound. He issued three walks against three strikeouts, but escaped without the loss. He didn’t put up a good K:BB ratio (3:3), but did a good job holding Albert Pujols, Matt Holliday & Co. in check. Cueto’s next start will come against Marlins next week in south Florida. He needs to be better. (Rotoworld, Rotowire)

Johnny Cueto felt tightness in his back as he warmed up on Thursday, reports John Fayman of the Cincinnati Enquirer. Cueto surrendered five earned runs on 10 hits against the Rangers on Thursday, but struck out six and walked just one, which is normally going to lead to a successful day, not a shelling. Either the Rangers’ hitters were lucky to find the holes in the defense, or Cueto’s pitches were missing something that allowed them to jump off the bat. Keep an eye out for further developments on Cueto’s back tightness. Cueto has a rotation spot lined up if he’s healthy enough to claim it. This development will be something to keep an eye on as more info rolls out. As is, it sounds minor, but tightness could indicate a bigger problem. Reds trainer Tomas Vera suggested it wasn’t a big injury. “It’s just stiffness,” Vera said. (Rotoworld, Rotowire)

Yesterday we started off our upcoming protected list preview with the 2010 No Doubters. There were only three, as for the first time since 2006 it didn’t include “Lincecum – $7″. Along with a new rule change that reduces the minimum amount of protectables from 9 to 5, the 2010 Roadrunners may be off to a shaky start. Here’s a look at the next group – the “Almost Automatics”. These guys would be No Doubters except for one or two chinks in the armor. Here’s the breakdown:

Johnny Cueto
1 Year – $5
11 Wins, 4.41 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, and 132 K’s
Cueto was acquired mid-year from Cover Zero, and shortly after that, the 23-year-old starter had a run-in with Dusty Baker’s School of Young Pitcher Fatigue. It was apparent to the entire world that he was either gassed, hurt, or both, but a 15-day DL stint for a sore hip seemed to cure all. According to most sources, his ERA and WHIP won’t be this bad, as he was lit up a bit in some of those aforementioned starts. Still plenty of potential here, for $5

Chris Iannetta
1 Year – $1
.228 Average, 41 Runs, 16 HR, 52 RBI, and 0 steals
Long-time Roadrunner Iannetta finally was given the starting gig for 2009, but his paltry average allowed Yorvit Torrealba to steal at-bats. Always a power threat, Iannetta suffered a May hamstring injury, and he just wasn’t the same after that. Last season he was a no-doubter, but this season, with the lousy average, and the signing of former Royals starter Miguel Olivo a threat to take more at-bats, Iannetta has some issues to be concerned about. He did sign a three-year, $8.35 million contract extension in early January, so at least he’ll be on the squad. Almost too much drama for $1.

Randy Wells
2 Years – $7
12 Wins, 3.05 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and 104 K’s
Wells was picked up in May, and proceeded to surprise all, earning a sixth-place finish in the Rookie of the Year voting (with one 2nd place vote). A converted catcher, Wells survived well in his second and third times through the league. While his ERA can’t possibly be as good, he should be a solid starter for 2010.

RP Juan Gutierrez had been on the Roadrunners in April and May of 2009, but was named the de-facto closer, following the trade of Rauch, and the season-ending knee injury of D’Backs closer Chad Qualls.

Other bidding for Gutierrez: $12 Misogynistic Padres (1st place), $10 Get Off Kong!

I also bid $5 on new Dodgers starter Vicente Padilla, but was outbid. He went for $10 to Misogynistic Padres

Also, there was a last-minute trade: X-Men gets former RoadRunner Ryan Theriot, Shoeless Jews gets Matt Holliday. This trade was within the rules, as players traded between the protection deadline and the cutoff cannot be protected. Neither could be protected in this case.
