Villanueva’s Streak Snapped

Carlos Villanueva allowed his first inherited runner of the season to score in the sixth inning Wednesday against Chicago. Villanueva had stranded all 14 runners he inherited before taking over with a runner on third and one out. Originally a starter, Villanueva probably won’t find himself in the Brewers rotation again anytime soon so he’s just an NL-only relief option for the time being. (CBS Sports)

Villanueva Picks up Rare 3-Inning Save

Brewers reliever Carlos Villanueva picked up a rare three-inning save Friday against Pittsburgh. Villanueva came on for Ben Sheets and pitched 3 1/3 innings, giving up just one hit and one walk, while striking out three. This is only the second time in his last eight appearances that Villanueva has avoided giving up a run. Still, it was a pretty impressive outing for his first save of the season and the second of his career. Originally supposed to be a starter, Villanueva probably won’t find himself in the Brewers rotation anytime soon so he’s just an NL-only relief option for the time being. (CBS Sports)

Villanueva Rocked Again - Gives up 2 HR, 7 Earned

Carlos Villanueva surrendered seven runs on 10 hits over five innings in a loss to the Marlins Thursday night. Another rocky outing for the inconsistent Milwaukee right-hander. Villanueva allowed a pair of home runs tonight, and has now given up 10 in 40 innings this season. “I didn’t feel bad,” he said after allowing 10 hits and two walks and recording six strikeouts. “I don’t think I should look at the scoreboard tonight and watch me give up seven runs. I don’t feel like I pitched that way. But that’s the way it’s going right now.” Villanueva has maintained a decent strikeout rate throughout his struggles, but the fact is he’s allowed 13 earned runs in his last 10 innings pitched. He’s worth holding on to in NL-only leagues, but he doesn’t deserve to start in any leagues right now and might ultimately pitch his way out of the rotation. His next start is scheduled for Tuesday against the Dodgers, making him a two-start pitcher for Fantasy Week 7 (May 12-18). (Rotoworld, CBS Sports)

Villanueva Cruises Until Giving Up Back-to-Back-to-Back Jacks

Miguel Tejada, Lance Berkman and Carlos Lee hit consecutive home runs off Carlos Villanueva in a four-run sixth inning to propel the Houston Astros to a 7-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night. The Astros trailed 4-2 before Tejada’s two-run shot to left off Villanueva with one out in the sixth. Berkman followed with his home run to almost the exact same spot in the left field Crawford Boxes to make it 5-4 and give Houston its first lead of the game. Lee then sent a shot to left center and inning after Hunter Pence first got his team on the board with a two-run shot off Villanueva. The Brewers’ right-hander left after Lee’s homer. He was charged with six runs and nine hits in five-plus innings. He struck out four. Villanueva cruised through four innings Friday before he left the ball up in a very dangerous ballpark to do that. He ultimately paid the price. Villaneuva’s ERA jumped from 4.66 to 5.56. He has been tagged for four or more runs in three of his six starts. The other three he has allowed just two. Villanueva has been either really good or really bad this season. As is expected from a pitcher with little starting experience. Villanueva is not yet in jeopardy of losing his job and remains a NL-only Fantasy SP. His next scheduled start is for Thursday gainst the Marlins, a team he took a no decision against April 26 after allowing two runs in six innings. (CBS Sports)

Villanueva Strong-ish, No Decision

Carlos Villanueva allowed two runs in seven innings against the Cardinals on Monday, but didn’t factor into the decision. Villanueva allowed just three hits, but he only struck out one and allowed four walks. Still, all his walks were granted to the heart of the St. Louis lineup, and it could be argued they were strategic. With the strong effort from Villanueva, Dave Bush and Manny Parra will have a lot of pressure on them in their starts over the next two days. One of the three will be pulled from the rotation if Ben Sheets avoids the disabled list. For now, he is scheduled to make a second start Fantasy Week 4 (April 21-27) coming Saturday against the Marlins. Villanueva remains a NL-only and larger mixed league Fantasy flier. Villanueva To Stay in Rotation

Carlos Villanueva will remain in the rotation, even with Yovani Gallardo returning from the DL on Sunday. It’ll be David Bush and not Villanueva or Manny Parra moving to the bullpen. If Ben Sheets can’t make his scheduled start on Wednesday, Bush would get the spot start, the Brewers’ telecast reported on Sunday. (Rotowire)

John Sickels Reviews Carlos Villanueva

John Sickels reviewed Carlos Villanueva in his “Not a Prospect” series on Minor League Ball.  The series should really be entitled “No Longer a Prospect, as They’re Young But No Longer Qualify for Rookie-of-the-Year Voting” or similar.  Some excerpts:

Villanueva opened 2006 in Double-A and pitched well; he continued pitching well in Triple-A, then ended the season with 53.2 strong innings for the Brewers. Last year he pitched 114 innings for Milwaukee with a 3.94 ERA. In 168 career innings entering 2008, Villanueva has a 138/64 K/BB with 144 hits allowed and a 3.86 ERA.

What does the future hold?

PECOTA seems to hate him, giving him a collapse rate of 60% entering 2008. His comparables list includes scary comps like Todd Van Poppel and Ken Cloude, but also a few more successful guys like Mudcat Grant and Moe Drabowsky. Although in the rotation right now, my personal belief is that he is best utilized in the long relief/spot starter role, and that as a full-time starter he would be more likely to get overexposed and fail.

Villanueva is a Grade C/C+ prospect made good, and I tend to root for guys like this. If he stays healthy I think he will have a mixture of good and bad seasons, the kind of guy who will post a 6.00 ERA in a bad year, drift to another team, then turn things around quickly and post a 3.00 mark in a limited role, before being overexposed and struggling again. In the end I think Villanueva balances out as an average major league pitcher overall, but that’s not an insult, and he gives hope to every guy in Double-A who has average stuff and is looking for a break.

Hmm, perhaps I should have said “$6″ on Manny Parra instead.

Villanueva Gives up HR to Pitcher, Has Teeth Kicked In

Carlos Villanueva allowed five earned runs in 4 2/3 innings on Wednesday night to take his second loss. Villanueva allowed two walks and two home runs, and didn’t strike out a single batter. Villanueva’s ERA rose to 6.19 Wednesday and he has now lost his last two starts after winning April 4 against the Giants. The Brewers are bringing Yovani Gallardo off the DL in the coming days and somebody will get bumped from the rotation. Villanueva is a candidate, along with Dave Bush and Manny Parra. Villanueva has experience as a reliever, so he could easily get moved back to the bullpen. For now, he is on track to start in a rematch with the Cardinals Monday, but that could all change in a moment’s notice. Stay tuned. (Rotoworld)
