Gerut Heating Up in Cactus League

San Diego OF Jody Gerut went 2-for-4 on Sunday against the Diamondbacks. Gerut led off and scored twice as he connected on his second home run of the spring. He’s batting .314 in 35 at bats. Gerut, a forgotten man since finishing fourth for AL Rookie of the Year in 2003, became the Padres’ everyday center fielder and posted a career-high .845 OPS. As a left-handed hitter, he could fall victim to the platoon role at some point during the season, but his .296 batting average and 14 home runs last year make him a nice low-end option in NL-only leagues. Wellemeyer Throws Five Innings – Three Earned

Cardinals SP Todd Wellemeyer allowed three runs on six hits over five innings in Sunday’s 5-4 win over the Orioles. Wellemeyer walked one and struck out three. Wellemeyer thrived under pitching coach Dave Duncan last season, becoming an above-average starter after years as a mediocre reliever. He probably doesn’t have much room to improve on last year’s numbers, but he might reach 200 innings this season and has the potential to win 15 games for an expected contender in St. Louis. Don’t forget about him late in mixed leagues. (CBS Sports)

Phillips Out for the Weekend with Flu

Brandon Phillips was scratched from both Saturday and Sunday’s game with flu-like symptoms. Phillips is considered day-to-day. The Reds have a bit of a bug going around, but Opening Day statuses shouldn’t take too much of a hit. Jeff Keppinger replaced him in the field Saturday and Edwin Encarnacion was bumped up to fill his spot in the lineup. (Rotoworld)

Lindstrom Ailing – Scheduled to Throw off Flat Ground

Matt Lindstrom (shoulder) is scheduled to throw off flat ground on Sunday, the Marlins’ official site reports. While there’s no timetable for him to throw in a game again, Lindstrom is confident that the injury isn’t serious. Leo Nunez appears to be the next in line to close for Florida if Lindstrom is unable to work the ninth inning in time for Opening Day. (Rotowire)
