Wellemeyer Allows 3 Earned in 6+ Innings, Gets Win

Todd Wellemeyer pitched the Cardinals past the Reds by allowing three runs in 6 1/3 innings on Saturday. Wellemeyer finishes up 13-9 with a 3.71 ERA. He’s always had the stuff, and his peripherals suggest that his numbers this year are no fluke. The Cardinals figure to go forward with him as their third or fourth starter next season. (Rotoworld)

Webb Solid But Unable to Get Win No. 23

Brandon Webb remained stuck on 22 wins after allowing four runs in seven innings Saturday against the Rockies. The Diamondbacks won by scoring three times in the bottom of the eighth, but Webb was gone by that time. A 23rd win might have been enough to get Webb another Cy Young Award, but he simply doesn’t deserve it this year. He currently ranks 10th in the NL with a 3.30 ERA, and he’s allowed an additional 12 unearned runs. Dan Haren has been Arizona’s most effective pitcher. (Rotoworld)

Victorino Collides with Rollins and Departs with Leg Injury

Shane Victorino suffered a leg injury Saturday after a collision with Jimmy Rollins in the eighth inning. Victorino stayed in the game, but had a pretty clear limp when he came to the plate in the bottom of the inning. “Shane got kicked in the shin,” manager Charlie Manuel said. “We’ll know a little more [Sunday]. He did get hurt, kind of like a charley horse. We’ll check on him as soon as we get to ballpark.” (Rotoworld)

Fielder Matches Career-High Hit Streak

Brewers 1B Prince Fielder’s bloop single in the seventh inning Saturday against the Cubs extended his hitting streak to 17 games, tying a career high. He finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and is batting .409 (27-for-66) with six home runs during the streak. Fielder’s hot finish gives you reason to consider him among the top five first basemen on Draft Day 2009, but he is a safer pick after those elite options are off the board. Still, at the age of 24, he remains an annual threat for 40 home runs. (CBS Sports)

DeWitt Goes 3-for-4 With Ninth Homer

Dodgers 3B Blake DeWitt played a nice little Saturday game against the Giants. DeWitt homered for the ninth time and went 3-for-4 with two RBI, the Dodgers only two RBI of the game. DeWitt has proven to have pop in his bat, but he is a streaky young infielder who will have to earn regular at-bats heading into spring 2009 at this point. If Jeff Kent retires, DeWitt is the likely starting second baseman for the Dodgers and that would give him decent value in deeper leagues. (CBS Sports)

Jones Likely to Start Only of Batting Title In Doubt

Chipper Jones (shoulder) isn’t expected to start this weekend. He could make a few pinch-hit appearances if the NL bating title gets too close for comfort. Chipper currently holds an eight-point lead. “If homeboy from St. Louis [Pujols] goes 5-for-5 [Saturday], I’ll have to go out there and see what I can do and tough it out,” Jones said. (Rotoworld)

Gonzalez Pitches Perfect Ninth in Non-Save Situation

Braves closer Mike Gonzalez pitched a perfect ninth inning in a non-save situation Saturday at Houston. He recorded two strikeouts. Gonzalez hasn’t dominated since taking over as Braves closer, posting a 4.28 ERA, but he was also just coming back from Tommy John surgery. If he keeps the role heading into next season, think of him as a No. 2 Fantasy option on Draft Day. (CBS Sports)

Hart’s Season: A Series of Down Endings – But Still 20/20

Brewers OF Corey Hart went 0-for-4 Saturday against the Cubs, lowering his second-half batting average to .242. He also has just five home runs since the All-Star break. Despite his second-half struggles, Hart has put together his second straight 20-20 season. He probably still has some upside in the power department, but think of him as just a No. 2 or 3 Fantasy OF entering 2009. (CBS Sports)

Sandoval Still Hot – Notches Three Hits Against Dodgers

Giants C Pablo Sandoval went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored Friday against the Dodgers. He’s now batting .343 in 143 at-bats. Sandoval has shown he has plenty of offensive potential, but he won’t play enough games at catcher to retain eligibility there entering 2009. Accordingly, think of him as just a late-round sleeper in mixed leagues. (CBS Sports)

Teixeira Putting Up Monster Numbers in Anaheim

Angels 1B Mark Teixeira was 0-for-1 with a walk before leaving Friday’s game against the Rangers. According to The Sports Xchange, Teixeira has reached base safely in 48 of the 52 games he has played with the Angels, scored 39 runs and driven in 42. Teixeira’s monster numbers with the Angels probably have more to do with him historically playing well in the second half than anything else. He’s a free agent in the offseason, but no matter where he signs, he’ll enter 2009 as a top-three Fantasy 1B and a likely third-round draft pick. (CBS Sports)

Headley Model of Consistency at Striking Out

Padres OF Chase Headley went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts Friday against the Pirates. He has had a strikeout in 22 of the Padres’ last 23 games — divided evenly into two, 11-game streaks. He has 33 strikeouts during the run and a total of 102 strikeouts in 325 at-bats over 89 games this season. Projected over a full season, that’s 185 strikeouts. Headley is a future star and a solid sleeper in deeper leagues down the stretch. He’ll have to cut down on the strikeouts before he can truly emerge, especially since he didn’t whiff at quite this rate in the minors. He should no doubt have a starting job next season, so consider taking a late-round flier on him in Fantasy drafts. (CBS Sports)

Streaking Fielder Extends to Brewer-Best 16 Games

The Sports Xchange notes that 1B Prince Fielder extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a double in the seventh inning Friday. The 16-game streak matches the longest by a Brewer this season. SS J.J. Hardy hit in 16 in a row from June 11 to July 4. Fielder’s hot finish gives you reason to consider him among the top five first basemen on Draft Day 2009, but he is a safer pick after those elite options are off the board. We saw picking him in the first or second round this year was a bit overrating of the young slugger. (CBS Sports)

Blanton Solid Against Nationals – Given Seven Run Cushion

Joe Blanton struck out two and gave up four runs — one earned — in six innings of work as the Phillies handed the Nationals their 100th loss of the year. The Phillies spotted Blanton a 7-1 lead entering the third, and the team went on to win 8-4, ensuring that it’d remain at least one game ahead of the Mets in the NL East. Though this was just Blanton’s fourth win in his 13 starts, he has been a great midseason acquisition for the Phillies, who went 9-4 when he was on the mound. He finished the season just short of 200 innings (197 2/3) with a 111/66 K/BB ratio in his 33 starts split between Oakland and Philadelphia. He’s under control for two more years, so he’ll be back in the middle of the rotation next season. (Rotoworld)
