Webb Pitches a Short Gem - Gets 17th Win

Brandon Webb earned his major league-leading 17th win of the season Sunday after holding the Braves to one earned run over six innings. Webb allowed six hits, but struck out five and tossed 62 of his 96 pitches for strikes. He also drove in two runs with a double in the fourth. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 2.88 and has a good chance of continuing the success against the Astros next week. (Rotoworld)

Johnson Cruises to Victory over Mets

Josh Johnson improved to 3-0 in six starts this season by holding the Mets to five hits and two earned runs over seven innings Sunday as the Marlins cruised to an 8-2 victory. He walked two but struck out five, dropping his ERA to 3.19. Joe Nelson, Arthur Rhodes and Kevin Gregg combined on two scoreless innings to finish out the game. Johnson will have a tough test against the Cubs next week, but he’s definitely worth a pickup in leagues where he’s available. (Rotoworld)

A month into his return from reconstructive elbow surgery, 30 pounds lighter and with a refined changeup to complement a dastardly slider and zipppy fastball, Johnson has given Florida the kind of pitcher other teams paid dearly for in midseason trades. “It’s like almost getting a big trade,” Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “To get him, for me, was like Milwaukee getting (CC) Sabathia.” The Marlins improved to 6-0 in Johnson’s starts this season, including three wins against the rival Phillies and Mets. Sabathia is 6-0 for the Brewers. Johnson (3-0), who had Tommy John surgery in August 2007 after going 12-7 in his rookie campaign of ‘06, gave up two runs and five hits to follow up six shutout innings in Philadelphia on Tuesday. He lowered his ERA from 4.18 to 3.19 with his past two starts. “I felt real good today,” Johnson said. “I absolutely attacked the zone.” (CBS Sports)

Crazy Gerut Launches 11th Homer Sunday - 4th in Six Games.

Padres OF Jody Gerut had three hits, including his 11th homer, and three RBI in six at-bats Sunday against the Rockies. Gerut chased Livan Hernandez, making his Colorado debut, with a three-run homer in the third that put Colorado ahead 9-0. It was his fourth homer in six games. He also has eight RBI in that span. Gerut has not only been homer crazy as of late, he also has seven multi-hit games since July 23. Gerut has been on a nice tear since late July, but since he is not an everyday player, he remains more of a stopgap Fantasy option while he is hitting well. (CBS Sports)

Hart Has a Six-Pack (2-2-2) on Sunday

Brewers OF Corey Hart had two hits, two walks and two stolen bases Sunday in a win over the Nationals. He now has 21 steals on the season. Hart has power and speed — two things that have turned him into a very reliable mixed-league outfielder. He is also hitting a solid .286, which is just above his career average. (CBS Sports)

Headley Extends Hit Streak

Padres 3B Chase Headley extended his hitting streak to six games with a single in two at-bats Sunday against the Rockies. He also had one RBI, scored once and walked three times. Headley is 9-for-21 (.429) with two homers, five RBI, four walks and one stolen base during the streak. The rookie Headley had a 10-game hitting streak earlier this season, but didn’t have a multi-hit game in that span. This latest streak is by far his most impressive run this season and he is showing the type of potential he brings to the table. He’s a solid young talent worth holding on to in deeper mixed keeper leagues and starting in deeper NL-only formats. (CBS Sports)
