McClung Pulled In the Fifth Inning, Takes Loss

Brewers SP Seth McClung allowed two runs and three hits in 4 2/3 innings during Monday’s 4-3 loss to the Rockies. McClung walked five and struck out five as he left trailing 2-0. He is winless in his last three starts (0-1) and has failed to make it to five innings in two of those starts. McClung might be struggling to make it five innings on the hill, but he has allowed two or fewer runs in seven of nine starts since entering the rotation. It doesn’t appear as though he will be yanked from his starting job any time soon. Still, McClung remains at best a low-end Fantasy SP. His next scheduled start is for Saturday against the Reds.

Johnson To Start Thursday Against Dodgers

Josh Johnson (elbow) is scheduled to make his season debut Thursday against the Dodgers. Johnson has come back strong from Tommy John surgery, tossing eight scoreless innings in his fifth and final minor league rehab start Friday at Double-A. He’s less than 12 months removed from going under the knife, so expect some struggles. If they’re smart, the Marlins will be very careful with his workload initially. (Rotoworld)

Hart Heating Up at the Plate

Brewers OF Corey Hart singled twice in four at-bats Monday against the Rockies. Hart is 12-for-29 (.414) with four RBI and four multi-hit games in his last seven otuings. Hart is not mentioned in the same breath as some of the elite Fantasy OFs, but maybe it is about time he gets his due credit. Hart is hitting .299 with 14 homers, 55 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 2008. Those numbers are good enough to be starting in all Fantasy formats. (CBS Sports)

Fielder Clobbers 17th Homer

Prince Fielder went 1-for-3 and clobbered his 17th homer of the season Monday. Fielder’s homer came off RP Taylor Buchholz as Colorado scored three times in the eighth. Fielder is 6-for-17 (.353) with one homer and four RBI during a four-game hitting streak. Fielder’s numbers are down across the board this year, and the homer was his first in two weeks. Fielder homered Monday for the first time since June 22, when he went deep twice against the Orioles. The slugging first baseman has nine homers since June 1 and is starting to look like his former self after a slow start to the season. (Rotowire, CBS Sports)

Headley Homers Off Marlins, Extends Hit Streak

Chase Headley hit his fifth homer of the season during the Padres’ loss to the Marlins on Monday. Headley hit a towering homer to right field Monday against the Marlins on Ricky Nolasco’s first pitch of the fifth inning. Headley is only batting .243, thanks in no small part to a hideous 22:0 K:BB ratio. He’s got a nice future, but for now, San Diego’s home ballpark and his teammates limit his upside. Pearce Optioned Back to AAA - What was the Point?

After Monday’s game against the Astros, the Pirates announced that OF Steve Pearce will be optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis to make room for SP Ian Snell, who will be activated from the disabled list to start Tuesday’s game against the Astros. Pearce did not make a start since being recalled July 2 and was 1-for-3 with the Pirates. Pearce is a strong long-term prospect, but remains just a NL-only and keeper Fantasy flier at this juncture. DeWitt Enjoys 3-for-3 Outing Against Braves

Dodgers 3B Blake DeWitt totaled three singles and one run in three at-bats Monday against the Braves. It was his first multi-hit game since June 5. Dewitt has just 2-for-14 (.143) in his first five July games. DeWitt has really been scuffling at the plate since late May and his solid start to the season seems to have happened ages ago. The minors might be calling his name before too long. DeWitt still sees plenty of starts at third base, but remains more of a NL-only Fantasy option. (CBS Sports)

Spilborghs Might Be Heading Back to the Pine

Ryan Spilborghs’ teammate Willy Taveras returned to the starting lineup on Monday after missing five straight starts. Spilborghs went 10-for-22 (.455) with two homers and seven RBI in Taveras’ absence. However, he should be limited to occasional starts now that the Rockies’ outfield is apparently back to full strength. (Rotowire)

Myers Has Solid Start at AAA

Brett Myers had a solid start Monday at Triple-A, allowing three runs over 7 1/3 innings. Myers had six strikeouts and two walks. “I really felt good out there tonight,” Myers said. “My location was a lot better than my last outing. I thought I threw the ball well and I threw 65 to 70 percent fastballs. I plan to be back in Philadelphia after the All-Star break. I’m down here working on my game.” (Rotoworld)
