Marshall K’s Seven, but Allows Four Earned in 4-2/3 Innings

Sean Marshall took a loss in his first start of 2008 after allowing four runs in 4 2/3 innings on Tuesday. Marshall struck out seven Orioles, but he gave up a couple of big hits to lefties, including Luke Scott’s two-run triple in the fourth and Nick Markakis’ RBI double in the fifth. Marshall, who hadn’t pitched in the majors since he went two innings in relief on May 7 against the Reds, pitched fairly well despite the loss. He’s expected to make one more start before Carlos Zambrano returns. (Rotoworld, CBS Sports)

Wilson Pitches Sloppy Ninth, Gets NL-Leading 20th Save

Brian Wilson recorded his 20th save of the season Tuesday when he allowed one run in the ninth inning of the Giants’ 3-2 win over the Indians. Entering with a 3-1 lead, Wilson gave up two hits and walked one, but he was able to record two crucial strikeouts to end the game. He now has a 4.55 ERA and a 35:15 K:BB ratio over 29.2 innings this year. Wilson is an interesting case. He is leading the national league in saves with 20, though he plays for a poor team in the Giants. Plus, he’s not exactly lights out, is he? That’s two games in a row where he’s been shaky and has allowed runs to cross. (Rotowire, CBS Sports)

Morton Fights Rangers, Flu, 3 Errors in Loss

Charlie Morton gave up four runs (two earned) over six innings in Tuesday’s loss to Milwaukee. He struck out four batters with one walk. He didn’t get much help from his defense as the Braves made three errors in the first inning. His control was much better after walking four batters in his last outing. Morton started despite battling a high temperature and other flulike symptoms, manager Bobby Cox said before the game. His next scheduled start is scheduled for Tuesday against the Phillies. Johnson Impresses Again in Rehab

Josh Johnson (elbow) gave up four runs — two earned — in 5 1/3 innings Tuesday in his rehab start for Double-A Carolina. He allowed six hits, walked none and struck out four in another solid effort. The control is especially impressive, as that’s usually the last thing a pitcher gets back as they try to regain a feel for their pitches following the surgery. Once Johnson proves he can handle a 100-pitch workload, expect to see him get the call back to the majors. There’s still plenty of time left for him to have a setback, but if he keeps this up, he’ll likely be added to Florida’s rotation right after the break. (Rotoworld, Rotowire)

Chipper Jones Might DH This Weekend at Toronto

Chipper Jones (quad) singled as a pinch-hitter Tuesday versus the Brewers. The Braves are aiming to get Chipper back into the starting lineup as a designated hitter on Friday against Toronto. (Rotoworld)

Blanco Not Getting It Done in Leadoff Spot

Braves OF Gregor Blanco again got to bat out of the leadoff spot Tuesday against the Brewers. He again struggled, going 0-for-4. He is hitting only .115 (3-for-26) as the leadoff man. Blanco reaches base at a decent rate, but he’s hitting only .242 and often sits against left-handed pitchers. Leave him for the deepest of NL-only leagues. (CBS sports)
