McClung Downs Orioles, Allows 2 Runs – But 5 Walks

Seth McClung threw 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball Saturday in a defeat of the Orioles. McClung won despite walking five. That used to be par for the course for him, but he’s walked one or none in four of his six starts since joining the rotation. He’d have to keep that up in order to be a useful fantasy starter. Myers Pitches Better, Still Shaky with 3 Homers Allowed

Brett Myers took a loss to the Angels after allowing four runs in 7 2/3 innings on Saturday. Myers allowed only eight batters to reach — one on an intentional walk — and struck out seven, but giving up three more homers doomed him. He’s surrendered a major league-high 23 homers on the year. Chipper Jones Adds RBI Single as Pinch-Hitter

Pinch-hitter Chipper Jones had an RBI single as part of the Braves’ comeback victory Saturday against the Mariners. The Braves scored twice in the eighth and twice in the ninth to win 5-4 at home. It looked like Jones was only going to be an option to hit left-handed off the bench tonight, but he did stay in after the Mariners brought in Arthur Rhodes to face him. He lined a single on the first pitch he saw and then came out for a pinch-runner. Jones is expected to miss at least one more start because of his strained right quad. (Rotoworld)

Wellemeyer Throws Good Bullpen Session

Todd Wellemeyer (elbow) threw a successful bullpen session Saturday and feels ready to return to the rotation. Wellemeyer tossed 40 pitches. “Everything felt pretty good,” he said. “My slider felt back to normal. I was getting out over it. Felt great.” It sounds like Wellemeyer will start Thursday in Detroit, though nothing is official. (Rotoworld)

Webb Ends Contract Extension Talks – For Now

Brandon Webb said extension talks with the Diamondbacks, which have been going off and on since the spring, have ended for now. “I’m done talking about it,” Webb said. “It’s gone on for five months, so I’m tired of it. It’s been off and on, but just to have something keep going on and on and on for months, it does kind of wear on you a little bit, and to have it done and over with for right now, it’s good to get that off my mind.” A three-year extension was discussed. The Diamondbacks already have the right-hander under control through 2010. (Rotoworld)

Gerut Nets Three Hits Saturday

Jody Gerut had three hits Saturday. Gerut had been struggling. The streaky outfielder is nothing more than a reserve for the deepest of NL-only leagues at this point, but if he a sleeper in other formats if he is going well from time to time. (CBS sports)

Victorino Still Running Despite Woes at Plate

Phillies OF Shane Victorino went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts Saturday against the Angels, but he did steal his 17th base. He has four stolen bases over his last four games despite batting .143 (2-for-14) over that stretch. A speedster like Victorino can rack up Fantasy points even when not hitting well. He has decent power too, but his ability to steal 40-plus bases makes him worth starting as a No. 3 Fantasy OF. (CBS Sports)

Marquis Wins His Fourth Straight

A 13-run outburst made it easy for Jason Marquis to win his fourth straight start and fifth straight decision Saturday against the White Sox. He gave up eight hits and five runs in seven innings, but that was enough. Marquis was bailed out of a 4-1 deficit in the fourth inning when the Cubs rallied for nine runs in the bottom half. After that, it was pretty much smooth sailing. Marquis now has a win in four straight starts and had not allowed more than three earned runs in a game since May 13. Fantasy owners should continue to use him in NL-only formats and larger mixed leagues on two start weeks. In the upcoming scoring period, he’ll have just one start against the same White Sox.
