Marquis Pitches Seven Strong, Downs Blue Jays

Jason Marquis pitched seven strong innings Saturday as the Cubs beat the Blue Jays 6-1. Marquis allowed just four hits and a single earned run. He struck out only one, but pitched efficiently. Two strong starts in a row means he’s due for a blowup, but if the Cubs keep hitting, Marquis has some value for his win potential. He’s 5-3 with a 4.24 ERA and will face the Rays next. (Rotoworld)

Headley Moving On Up (Finally)

The Padres will call up Chase Headley in time for Sunday’s game against the Indians. It’s odd timing, considering that the Padres are playing pretty well, and if they were going to do it, it would have made more sense to make the move Friday, when they first had the DH available. Headley should take over as the Padres’ primary left fielder, costing Scott Hairston and Jody Gerut some at-bats. Either Justin Huber or Paul McAnulty likely will be designated for assignment. Headley was hitting .305 with 13 homers and 40 RBI for Triple-A Portland. Although they have been playing well recently, the Padres will get an immediate boost from Headley’s bat. He has experience in both left field and at third and could start at either position for the Padres. He’s worth an immediate pickup in NL-only leagues and probably in many mixed leagues too, given his ability to hit for both average and power. (Rotoworld, Rotowire)

Chipper Jones Returns, Down to .409

One day after injuring his eye in batting practice, Chipper Jones returned to the lineup and went hitless in three at-bats. He walked in his other two plate appearances, but his average still fell to .409. Except Jones to be in the lineup tomorrow, for better or worse of his quest for .400. (Rotoworld)

Gerut Heating Up, Batting .435 This Week

Padres OF Jody Gerut hit a game-tying solo home run in the eighth inning of Saturday’s 8-3 win against the Indians. Gerut’s third homer of the season tied the game at 3 and San Diego eventually won in 10 innings. Gerut finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run. He is 10-for-23 (.435) with one homer and six RBI in his last six games. Gerut plays against most every right-handed pitcher, but he almost always sits against lefties. Having limited skills and a limited role restricts his Fantasy appeal to deeper NL-only leagues. (CBS Sports)

Spilborghs 0-for-8 as DH This Weekend – Ouch

Ryan Spilborghs served as the Rockies’ DH on Friday and Saturday. He went 0-for-8 and is 6-for-30 (.200) in June. He has a golden opportunity to supplant Willy Taveras in center field, but isn’t taking advantage yet. The Rockies have six more games in AL parks this season, but other than those contests, Spilborghs and Taveras will battle for playing time in center field. (Rotowire)

Iannetta To Start with Torrealba’s Suspension

Chris Iannetta’s platoon mate Yorvit Torrealba (suspension) will sit out on Sunday and Monday, the Rockies’ official web site reports. Iannetta should pick up both starts; Triple-A catcher Edwin Bellorin has been recalled to serve as his backup. If Iannetta stays hot, he will continue to receive the bulk of the playing time over Torrealba. He has started five of Colorado’s last seven games. (Rotowire)

Phillips Goes 2-for-5 With 13th Home Run

Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips, hitting .268 on the year, went 2-for-5 Saturday in a loss to the Boston Red Sox. Phillips hit his 13th home run of the season — third among NL second baseman — and also struck out once. Phillips had just one hit in his previous three games, but the second baseman has been excellent this season for the Reds and is putting up good power numbers. If the Expos and Indians were a little more patient with Phillips’ progression, they could have an All-Star second baseman. Continue to start Phillips in all Fantasy formats. (CBS Sports)
