Webb Wins Ninth Straight
Brandon Webb allowed three runs over 7 1/3 innings against the Rockies on Thursday night, improving to 9-0 in Arizona’s 8-5 victory. Webb faced just one batter over the minimum during the first five innings, getting all of his outs with grounders and strikeouts, and meanwhile the Diamondbacks jumped out to a big lead. The Rockies offense started to come on in the late innings, and actually gave the D-Backs a scare in the ninth when they rallied and eventually got Matt Holliday to the plate representing the tying run, but Brandon Lyon squirmed out of a sticky situation to seal an Arizona victory. Backed by Stephen Drew’s career-high four hits, Webb became the major leagues’ first nine-game winner when the Diamondbacks defeated the Rockies 8-5 Thursday. Webb (9-0) has won his first nine starts, the most since San Diego’s Andy Hawkins won his first 10 in 1985, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Webb has won 11 straight starts dating to last September. Whether he has been perfect or not in 2008, Webb has kept Arizona in every game he has pitched and they have supplied enough offense to make him a nine-game winner. Webb held Colorado scoreless for six innings Thursday and continues to look dominant on the hill. His next scheduled start is for Wednesday at Florida. Webb won his lone start against the Marlins last season as he pitched seven scoreless innings. (Rotoworld, CBS Sports)

Lincecum Fans Ten, Bullpen Botches It
Tim Lincecum fanned 10 on Thursday, but wasn’t involved in the decision after allowing three runs in six innings against the Astros. Blame Tyler Walker. Lincecum left with a 7-3 lead, but Walker allowed the Astros to come all of the way back in the eighth. It was the second 10-strikeout game of the year for Lincecum. He hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in any of his starts.
“He had just a little blip (three-run fourth) on the radar there,” Lance Berkman said. “He’s got as good of stuff as I’ve ever seen.”Lincecum has allowed just eight earned runs over his last four starts, but has just one win to show for it. The Giants offense has struggled recently and the bullpen hasn’t been great to Lincecum. Two reasons why the wins have dried up in San Fran for the young righty. Lincecum could possibly be a nine-game winner if he was playing for a contender. Not the case. He is still an elite arm and must-start Fantasy SP. His next scheduled start is for Tuesday against the Rockies. His only loss came April 29 against the Rockies. Lincecum might be a two-start pitcher Fantasy Week 8 (May 19-25), if the team chooses to skip Patrick Misch’s second start. (Rotoworld, CBS Sports)

Lyon Makes Matters Worse, Yet Bails Himself Out Again
Diamondbacks RP Brandon Lyon had to bail out RP Brandon Medders in the ninth inning Thursday against the Rockies, but in the process Lyon picked up his 12th save. Medders entered the game with a 8-3 lead. He loaded the bases after the first three hitters and manager Bob Melvin called on Lyon to clean up the mess. He was greeted by a Scott Podsednik RBI single. He then got Ryan Spilborghs to hit a sac fly. Lyon struck out Clint Barmes and retired Matt Holliday on a grounder to third to end it. Lyon has now converted 12 of 14 saves chances and 11 in a row. He hasn’t allowed a run in 16 straight appearances dating back to April 9. Lyon looked awful in the closer’s role through the first week, but has been nothing short of spectacular since. The Diamondbacks will win plenty in 2008, and as long as Lyon doesn’t lose his cool, he will earn many saves. Lyon remains a high-end Fantasy RP. (CBS Sports)

Theriot Leads League in Multi-Hit Games
Cubs SS Ryan Theriot recorded his major league-leading 18th multi-hit game Wednesday. He singled twice and walked. Over his last 10 games, Theriot is batting .375 (15-for-40). Theriot got off to a hot start right of the gate and has yet to cool off. He hit only .266 last season, so you have to wonder if he’ll maintain this pace, but his ability to steal bases while hitting for a high average makes him worth starting in most Fantasy leagues, especially rotisserie ones. Chipper Sits Thursday, Good Time To Review His Season
Chipper Jones sat out Thursday’s game with a sore groin, but said afterward that he expects to play Friday against the A’s. “I’m thinking bigger picture,” Jones said. “If I can miss one game here and there to avoid missing six or seven, or a 15-day DL stint, then I have to be smart enough to be able to step aside for one game.” The Atlanta Journal Constitution notes that Jones is the fourth National League player since 1960 to record at least 60 hits and 10 homers before his team’s 40th game, joining Billy Williams in 1964, Lou Brock in 1967 and Larry Walker in 1997. Jones missed a couple of games with back spasms in April, and he’s likely day-to-day with this groin injury. He’s leading the majors with a .418 batting average and is fourth in the league with 11 home runs, but don’t count on this being the last time he’s slowed by injury this season. (Rotoworld)
Jones has hit safely in 32 of 37 games and ranks second in the major leagues in on-base percentage (.479) and slugging percentage (.705). He is the first qualifying hitter with a .400 average as late as May 14 since 1994, when the Yankees’ Paul O’Neill was hitting .461 on that date and San Diego’s Tony Gwynn was batting .419. (CBS Sports)
ESPN Chose to honor Chippers off-day with a front-page treatment, including a few articles from Jerry Crasnick and Rob Neyer as to where Chipper stands in terms of his career. Upshot: Definite Hall-of-Famer, but then you have to mention the average defense, which knocks him down to “probable” Hall-of-Famer.

No one — let alone a 36-year-old — hits .400 anymore. Not in this era of specialization. Then again, we’re talking about a 36-year-old named Larry who calls himself Chipper. So … enjoy the ride! Jerry Crasnick

Victorino Goes Yard for First Time of 2008
Phillies OF Shane Victorino crushed the third home run off Braves SP Chuck James Thursday in the fourth inning of a 5-0 win. Victorino followed a one-out walk to Jimmy Rollins with his first homer, a shot to left center. Victorino did strand four runners, but now has three RBI in his last two games. If you were expecting Victorino to be a valuable source of homers in 2008, we need to talk. Victorino is best used for his ability to steal bases and score runs. A decent average is also possible, but Victorino has failed miserably in that department this season. He is more of a Rotisserie league Fantasy OF when healthy. (CBS Sports)

James Soaked With High-Test, Lit on Fire
The Phillies tagged Chuck James for five runs on six hits and five walks over four innings on Thursday night. James threw just 40 of his 77 pitches for strikes and failed to fan a single batter while surrendering three homers. In two starts since being recalled from the minors, he is 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA and 2.10 WHIP. (Rotoworld)

Bowker Enjoys Three-RBI Night
Giants OF John Bowker had a sac fly and two-run double in four at-bats Thursday against the Astros. Bowker is 6-for-17 (.353) with one homer and five RBI in his last five games. Bowker tends to sit against left-handed pitchers, which limits his opportunities to help in Fantasy. His lack of upside makes him more of an NL-only option anyway. (CBS Sports)

Andruw Jones Heating Up - Over Last Two Games
Andruw Jones hit his second home run of the season Thursday afternoon. Jones is batting just .182 for the season but does have three hits in his last two games with two RBI. We’ll see if this helps the recently benched Jones earn more playing time. Jones, hitting .182, turned on a high fastball for a solo homer to lead off the inning, his second homer and seventh RBI this season. After an out, Ben Sheets hung a breaking ball and Kent made it 2-0. “He made a mistake and I was able to take advantage of it,” Jones said. “In that inning all of sudden, he started throwing balls up and we were able to hit him.” Jones is now 3-for-9 (.333) over his last two games with three RBI in his last four games. Iannetta Earning More Time Behind the Plate
Chris Iannetta started on Thursday for the eighth time in Colorado’s last 11 games. He went 1-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored. He is only 3-for-his-last-18, but platoon mate Yorvit Torrealba is 3-for-his-last-21. The two have split Colorado’s last six starts. Despite manager Clint Hurdle’s recent statement that Torrealba is still the starter, this looks like a 50-50 time share and one player could grab the upper hand if he gets hot. Ianetta has been the more productive of the two from a Fantasy standpoint. He’s hitting over .300 with 15 RBI and three homers while Torrealba is hitting just .228. (Rotowire, CBS Sports)
