Wellemeyer Cruises Until the Sixth

Cardinals SP Todd Wellemeyer, who had allowed no more than two earned runs in either of his first two starts, was cruising along in his third at the Giants before the sixth inning, when he allowed five earned runs. Wellemeyer had a shutout going until Matt Cain’s solo shot in the top of the sixth. He went on to give up four more runs in the inning. They were all originally ruled unearned, but the call was changed afterwards. It just isn’t easy to get credited with an error these days. He took a no-decision, striking out seven in six innings of work while surrendering five hits and three walks. Wellemeyer continues to strike out batters at a phenomenal rate, having whiffed 20 in 18 innings. No one saw him as a strikeout-per-inning guy, but pitching coach Dave Duncan is known for working miracles. We say Wellemeyer’s upside remains limited to NL-only leagues, but you could do worse than give him a chance in his next start, which should come Friday against the Giants. (Rotoworld, CBS Sports)

Chipper Removed During Blowout

Chipper Jones left Saturday’s game at Washington after three at-bats with the Braves up 10-1. He went to the clubhouse to get treatment for two sore quads, but is expected to play Sunday. “I told him, before the game, if we get a lead, I’m going to take you out,” Braves manager Bobby Cox said. “It worked out perfectly.” Jones came up lame Friday night at Washington while scoring from second base on an RBI single by Matt Diaz, but he stayed in that game and was able to play Saturday as well. Fantasy owners don’t seem to have to worry about him missing a game, but it’s something to keep an eye on. He remains an elite Fantasy 3B when healthy. (CBS Sports)

Victorino on 15-Day Disabled List

Phillies placed outfielder Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right calf. Victorino went 2-for-4 in Friday’s game before departing. Victorino made a leaping catch against the center-field wall on a Mark DeRosa drive in the second inning. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel thinks Victorino injured his calf making that play. It’s certainly not a good sign that the team didn’t even want to wait and see how he felt Sunday before making a final decision. The Phillies will go with So Taguchi and Jayson Werth in center field for at least the next 15 days. The Phillies had to know going in that they probably weren’t going to get 150 games from Victorino this season. They have So Taguchi and Jayson Werth capable of replacing Victorino in center. Even if Taguchi plays a little more, Werth will be the better bet of the two in NL-only leagues. Victorino looked like a nice Fantasy sleeper coming into the season, flashing the ability to hit 15 homers and steal 40 bases. This injury shouldn’t threaten his season, of course, but you’ll have to move him to a DL spot for at least the next couple of weeks. Chris Snelling will likely play a reserve role and shouldn’t make much of a Fantasy impact. (Rotoworld, CBS Sports)

Reyes To Return by Tuesday?

Jose Reyes is aiming for a Tuesday return from a mild left hamstring injury. Reyes will be at Shea Monday for treatment and will see how the pain is before deciding if he’ll return for Tuesday’s game with the Nationals. Damion Easley started at shortstop today and failed to come up with two balls that Reyes likely would have gloved. He’ll probably start tomorrow anyway, but he’s not a legitimate backup shortstop at this point in his career. (Rotoworld, Rotowire)

Prince Bumped Down to Fourth

Brewers manager Ned Yost, trying to shake up struggling sluggers Ryan J. Braun and Prince Fielder, flipped them in the lineup Sunday against the Mets. He moved Braun back to third, where he hit most of last season. Braun had a two-run single, the third hit in 23 at-bats for last season’s NL Rookie of the Year. Fielder went 0-for-5, and is in a 2-for-24 slump. Braun struck out twice Sunday and Fielder K’ed once. A first-round Fantasy pick in most formats this season, Fielder has zero homers and trails the likes of teammates Gabe Kapler (four) and Bill Hall (four) in that department. Hall was a middle-to-late round pick in most formats, and Kapler wasn’t even playing baseball last season. That shows you how much of a funk Fielder is in. Perhaps Fantasy Week 3 (April 14-20) will be the time Fielder breaks out. The Brewers play the Cardinals and Reds in the upcoming scoring period. Fielder hit .300 with five homers and 14 RBI in 15 games last season against St. Louis, and he hit .345 with five homers and 12 RBI in 15 games against the Reds.(CBS Sports)
