John Maine was removed after allowing one run and six hits in 4 1/3 innings Wednesday against the Dodgers. Manager Willie Randolph wasted no time in going to the pen after two reached in the fifth. Pedro Feliciano entered with one out and fanned Kenny Lofton. Chad Bradford then took over and retired Nomar Garciaparra to end the inning. It looked like the strategy might have backfired when the Dodgers scored three times in the seventh, Guillermo Mota’s second inning of work. However, the Mets overcame that and won 6-5. Maine benefited greatly from a play with no outs in the second on which the Dodgers had two guys thrown out at home plate on Russell Martin’s double. J.D. Drew followed Jeff Kent home on the play and both were tagged out by Paul Lo Duca, who only became aware of Drew’s presence thanks to Maine’s shouting.
Even if the Dodgers are facing elimination, Derek Lowe will not pitch Game 4 of their ALDS series against the Mets, according to the LA Times. Lowe will start today’s playoff opener, while Brad Penny would get the nod for a potential Game 4. This could of course be a smokescreen, but manager Grady Little would prefer to give his starters normal rest during the playoffs when at all possible.
Brewers general manager Doug Melvin met with Geoff Jenkins after the Brewers’ season final and told him there’s a chance he’ll be traded over the offseason, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Jenkins is signed through the 2007 season, and is set to make $7 million next year. “We basically told Geoff the situation, that he’s not any different from anybody else,” Melvin said. “There are not many untouchables. He could be wearing a Brewers uniform or he might not be. We were direct with him about that. I try not to make any deals just to get rid of players. I’m not going to push to do that. I’m not able to answer that question today but he does know (a trade) is a possibility.”
