Overnight Dispatches

From Rotoworld, Rototimes:

Brandon Webb threw a one-hitter for his third shutout of the season Saturday against the Cardinals. Scott Rolen’s fourth-inning double broke up the no-hit bid early enough, but Webb was nearly perfect otherwise. He walked none, though he did hit a batter, and he recorded five strikeouts to go along with his 16 groundball outs. In all, he threw just 96 pitches. Though Webb entered with a 5.36 ERA and a 31/22 K/BB ratio in his previous seven starts, this answers pretty much all of the remaining questions about the health of his elbow.

Chuck James moved to 9-3 by holding the Cubs to three runs — two earned — and six hits in seven innings on Saturday night. James won for the fifth time in six starts. He hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any of his last seven outings. The victory tonight brings the Braves back to within five games in the wild-card chace.

Chris Iannetta should see the majority of the action behind the plate for the Rockies the rest of the season now that Yorvit Torrealba has been shut down with a strained right shoulder. He figures to be the team’s starting catcher in 2007. Maybe Torrealba could have returned, but we get the feeling the Rockies would just as soon play Chris Iannetta anyway. It was also his shoulder that caused Torrealba to miss the first two months of the season. Iannetta will have fantasy value in NL-only leagues the rest of the way.

Jason Bay had a homer and a two-run double to lead the Pirates to a 7-4 win over the Reds on Saturday. Bay hasn’t been at his best lately, but he now has exactly as many homers (32) and RBI (101) as he finished 2005 with. The Reds have been a frequent victim this year. He’s batting .408 with four homers and 16 RBI in 12 games against the club.

Chipper Jones, who is dealing with a strained left oblique, took light infield practice and a few tentative left-handed swings in the cage Saturday, according to the AP. “I didn’t really stretch it out,” he said. “I was kind of afraid to. I just wanted to get out here and see something coming at me and swing a bat, exercise a little bit. I threw across the infield fine. As long as I didn’t overextend myself, I was fine.” Chipper may not return until late next week, and it’s possible that he won’t return at all this year.
