Overnight Dispatches
Roy Oswalt took a perfect game into the seventh and ended up throwing 7 2/3 scoreless innings against the Mets today to record his 11th win of the season. Jose Reyes led off the seventh with a dribbler to short that Adam Everett tried to barehand. He couldn’t make the play, although it’s debatable whether Everett could have nailed Reyes at first even has he fielded the ball cleanly. Oswalt walked one later in the seventh and was removed after yielding two more hits in the eighth. The Astros themselves totaled just one hit in the contest, but were able to score twice thanks to nine walks.
Brandon Webb took a loss against the Nationals on Sunday after yielding five runs in 7 1/3 innings of work. Webb was sailing through the first seven innings, allowing just one run and four baserunners. However, three singles, two walks, and a double scored four runs to give the Nationals a 5-3 lead in the contest. Considering that one of the singles was a bunt and one of the walks intentional, Webb didn’t pitch all that badly even in the eighth. He struggled while posting a 5.01 ERA in August, but expect Webb to rebound over the season’s final four weeks.
Chipper Jones aggravated his strained oblique on a swing in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader and is expected to miss at least the three-game series against the Mets. Willy Aybar will start in his place for at least the next few days, making him worthy of a pickup in NL-only leagues. Jones was in the starting lineup for the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader against the Phillies. Jones’ strained left oblique is more of a problem when he’s swinging from the right side. As a result, he sat out the first game against Jamie Moyer and returned against Brett Myers.
Shane Victorino hit a walk-off single off Braves closer Bob Wickman in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday to give the Phillies an 8-7 victory. The Braves came back from a three-run deficit in the top of the ninth to take a 7-6 lead. However, two singles and a walk scored one and set Victorino up to drive in the game-winner with another single to right. That made a winner out of Geoff Geary, who now has seven relief wins on the season.
Jorge Julio has been removed from the closer’s role after blowing the save in Saturday’s game against the Nationals. Mixed leaguers should drop him, and NL-only leaguers can do the same. It’s possible he’ll turn it around soon, but it’s not very likely that he’ll reemerge as a candidate for saves with the end of the year just four weeks away. Julio was 16 of 20 in save chances this year.
The Padres activated Khalil Greene from the DL Sunday. Greene didn’t start Sunday’s game but pinch-ran and scored the winning run. He will have his strained left middle finger examined by a specialist today, and he likely will have an MRI taken of the digit within a few days. Greene will only be available as a pinch-runner and a defensive replacement for now, as his injury finger still won’t allow him to swing the bat. It’s uncertain when he might rejoin the starting lineup.
Matt Wise will have season-ending elbow surgery in the next week, Brewers assistant general manager Gord Ash said. The hope is that it’s only a nerve issue, so Wise should be ready for spring training. Wise ends the year with a 3.86 ERA in 44 1/3 innings of relief.
Armando Benitez will be sidelined for the next few days with arthritis flareups in both of his knees. The arthritis has been an issue for a few years with Benitez, but he’s battled through it most of the time. There was no defined timetable given for Benitez’s return. Mike Stanton, who has recorded saves in each of the last two days, is probably the favorite for saves with Benitez out.
