Overnight Dispatches

From Rotoworld, Rototimes:

The East Valley Tribune reports that Juan Cruz was pulled from the rotation three weeks ago due to concerns about his right shoulder. “One of the reasons I did put him in the bullpen was because he was suffering, not some pain, but getting into a tired arm type of area,” manager Bob Melvin said. “The longer we were running him out there, we felt that was going to crop up at some point.

As expected, slumping first baseman Prince Fielder was held out of the starting lineup again Thursday. However, he entered the game after Jeff Cirillo was ejected in he first inning. Fielder, who entered the game hitless in his past 17 at-bats connected for a homer in the eighth. He finished the game 2-for-3. Fielder was getting a break while winding down his worst month as a major leaguer to date. He’s certainly not going to lose his job, but unless this signals the end of his slump, he may continue to receive the occasional day off.

Matt Wise was forced to cut short his bullpen session yesterday, saying he felt “jolts” in his elbow on every pitch, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. It was his first session since going on the disabled list with soreness in the joint. He’ll be examined Friday, and it’s possible he won’t return to action this season.

Arizona’s top catching prospect Miguel Montero is expected to be called up on Friday. The Diamondbacks already have two catchers that are hitting well in Johnny Estrada and Chris Snyder, but Montero is the team’s catcher of the future so they will likely give him some extra playing time in September. He hit .323 with seven homers and 29 RBIs in 35 games with Triple-A Tucson this season and is someone to watch in NL-keeper leagues.

Jose Reyes went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI in Thursday’s game against the Rockies. Reyes has 17 hits during an eight-game hitting streak, pushing his average back up to .300. He also swiped his 55th base tonight.

Armando Benitez earned a save Thursday despite giving up a run in the ninth against the Braves.  Benitez was pitching on a second straight day after missing a few games with a sore elbow. He probably won’t be asked to go three straight days, so Mike Stanton or another reliever could be called on to close Friday.

Cardinals placed LHP Mark Mulder on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 30, with a left shoulder injury.  But Rick Sutcliffe assured us Mulder was just one or two starts away from returning to 20-win form. The free-agent-to-be is due to get a second opinion on his shoulder within the next few days. If the diagnosis is the same, he’ll likely undergo surgery to repair the fraying around his labrum. Anthony Reyes is expected to take Mulder’s turn on Sunday. He should be used right away in NL-only leagues.
