Overnight Dispatches
Doug Davis improved his record to 7-6 by limiting the Cardinals to three runs over 5 1/3 innings of work on Friday. Davis walked four and gave up six hits, but the left-hander pitched out of a few jams and also benefited from reliever Dan Kolb stranding three runners in the sixth. Davis is second in the majors with 76 walks in 140 innings of work and also has a 5.01 ERA, so that he’s managed a winning record is pretty impressive.
Francisco Cordero picked up his third save in the National League by throwing a scoreless ninth against the Cardinals tonight. Cordero entered with a 4-3 lead and retired Aaron Miles, David Eckstein, and Chris Duncan in order to give the Brewers the victory. Derrick Turnbow threw two-thirds of an inning without allowing a baserunner before Cordero entered, but the former Ranger will have to pitching himself out of closing duties at this point.
Prince Fielder added his 21st homer of the season on Friday when he took Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter deep for a two-run shot in the third inning. The homer was just Fielder’s fourth of the year with men on base, and all four of those have been with just one man on. He’s hitting .281 with runners on base, so it’s probably just a fluke that so much of his power has occurred with nobody on. We wouldn’t expect that trend to continue, which could lead to higher RBI totals in the future.
Khalil Greene appears to be questionable to start Saturday after spraining his left middle finger during Thursday’s game. It’s possible that he won’t be back until Tuesday. Geoff Blum started at shortstop on Friday night.
Chuck James took a loss versus the Reds on Friday after yielding four runs in 5 1/3 innings of work. James only gave up two hits, but he also walked three and one of the hits was a two-run homer to Royce Clayton. This start is still an improvement over his last outing in which he was rocked for seven runs, but James isn’t looking like an every week option in NL-only formats. He’s a mediocre play against the Phillies next time out.
Brandon Webb will miss his scheduled start Saturday with an inflamed elbow, but he’s not expected to go on the disabled list. “He’s obviously a guy we can’t be too careful with,” manager Bob Melvin said. “He wants to pitch and feels like he can, but as long as there’s some soreness in there we’re just going to go the extra yard and make sure he’s healthy.” It currently looks like Webb will have to be left active next week. Dustin Nippert will be called up to start in his place on Saturday. Mike Koplove could be sent down to make room for him.
Tom Gorzelanny was dominant over eight innings against the Cubs on Friday, allowing just two hits and striking out seven for his second major league victory. Gorzelanny wasn’t allowed to go for the shutout after throwing 111 pitches. Josh Sharpless took over in the ninth and retired three of the four batters he faced in thr 6-0 win. Gorzelanny had little trouble throwing his 94-95 mph fastball past Cubs hitters today, and he also showed the best changeup we’ve seen from him to date. He’ll still have days on which his command lets him down, but he’s likely to be worth using in NL-only leagues over the rest of the season.
