Overnight Dispatches
After Armando Benitez blew his third straight save, Giants GM Brian Sabean said Monday the club would “consider other options” at closer. However, on Tuesday manager Felipe Alou admitted the club doesn’t have any other real options, so Benitez will have to stay in the role for now, according to the Contra Costa Times. “Armando Benitez has to be the closer of this team,” he said. “If Timmy Worrell was healthy and active I would probably act or think differently.” Even though he’s blown his last three save chances, Benitez has a 2.76 ERA this season. He’s the best that the Giants have to offer.
Johnny Estrada was held out of the starting lineup Tuesday after leaving Monday’s game an upset stomach, according to the AP. Manager Bob Melvin said Estrada was improving and was available if needed. “(He’s feeling) better,” Melvin said. “He was actually feeling better after the game after we got some fluids in him. We’ll give him another day.
Mark Mulder, who has been out with a shoulder injury since late June, threw 50-60 pitches in a simulated game, according to the AP. He could begin a rehab assignment by the end of the week. “We’ll see how he comes out of it,” manager Tony La Russa said. “But it’s great to see him on the mound.”
Prince Fielder has been moved to the No. 3 spot in the Brewers’ lineup. Fielder has batted No. 3 for the past five games and manager Ned Yost intends to keep him there. “I want to get him used to that position,” Yost said. “If you look around and see the hitters we’ve got on our club, he’s the best hitter we’ve got all the way around. It’s his time.”
Francisco Cordero got four outs tonight to pick up his second save for the Brewers in a 1-0 game against the Rockies. After retiring the only batter he faced in the eighth, Cordero started the ninth by giving up a triple to Todd Helton on a ball misplayed by center fielder Tony Gwynn Jr. However, he never let the Rockies hit the ball in play they needed to score the tying run. He struck out Yorvit Torrealba, walked Brad Hawpe, struck out Luis Gonzalez, walked Choo Freeman and struck out Cory Sullivan to end it. Such is life with Cordero as a closer. He’ll get the job done most of the time and have plenty of fantasy value over the final third of the season. “It’s all about who gets the job done,” manager Ned Yost said. “I don’t like doing it, but at this point of the year you’ve got to go with the best option. Right now, Frankie is the best option to close games out.”
Former Roadrunner Tim Lincecum struck out seven in three scoreless innings Monday for SS Single-A Salem-Keiser. Is is too early to call him up to close? Lincecum, the 10th overall pick in the 2006 draft, has fanned 10 while allowing one hit and no walks in four innings as a pro. Of all the players from this year’s draft, he might be the closest to contributing. Still, the Giants have elected to go slowly with him after he was worked hard during the college season.
