Overnight Dispatches
The New York Daily News reports that Jose Reyes pledged to return to action on Tuesday. Reyes said he temporarily will play with the stitches in his left pinkie and will have them removed later on.
Jeff Kent hasn’t fully recovered from his abdominal strain. Although he plans to keep playing through the injury, he admitted it would heal quicker if he were to rest, according to the LA Times. “There’s not a lot of grimacing on his face after he swings,” said manager Grady Little. “Maybe he’s not 100 percent, but every time he goes to the plate, he’s a threat.
Kerry Wood will seek two opinions from specialists this week before determining if he will have surgery or attempt to heal his shoulder through rest. Wood has a partial tear in his right rotator cuff. He is likely done for the season and could miss a majority of next season if he undergoes surgery.
Prince Fielder went 3-for-5 with a homer and two runs scored as the Brewers defeated the Diamondbacks 10-5 on Sunday. The Brewers collected 16 hits, with every regular in the lineup recording at least one today. Geoff Jenkins and Corey Hart also homered with Bill Hall and Brady Clark each scoring twice.
Chuck James recorded a win over the Padres on Sunday despite yielding five runs over five innings of work. James struck out just three, but he also only walked one and gave up six hits. The Padres converted five of seven baserunners into runs, but still couldn’t pull off the victory with Jake Peavy struggling. James is 4-0 in four starts, but he’s given up five homers between his last three starts. He’s a risky play against the Phillies later this week, but he should be left active in NL-only formats.
Chipper Jones tied a major league record by posting at least one extra-base hit in 14 straight games when he homered against the Padres today. The previous record holder was Paul Waner, who matched the same feat in 1927 with the Pirates. Jones also singled twice and walked twice while driving in three runs in the contest. He’ll try to break the record against Jeff Weaver and the Cardinals tomorrow.
Adam Dunn delivered his 30th homer on Sunday when he belted a solo blast off Rockies reliever Tom Martin. Dunn is tied with Ryan Howard for second in the NL in homers. His career-best is 46, a number he’s got a pretty good chance of surpassing this season.
