Overnight Dispatches
Jose Reyes said yesterday that he doesn’t intend to return from his cut finger until at least Tuesday, according to the New York Daily News. He’s played catch the past two days but isn’t completely comfortable. “I catch the ball and it’s a little scary,” Reyes said.
Mike Lieberthal made his first start on Saturday since being activated from the DL and went 0-for-4 with an RBI on a sacrifice fly. He had been out since June 5 with a left hip strain.
Stephen Drew, the Diamondbacks’ first-round pick in the 2004 draft, made his major league debut at shortstop, going 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored Saturday night. Manager Bob Melvin batted Drew eighth and said Drew would be his everyday shortstop, at least until the injured Craig Counsell returns in three-to-six weeks. “Drew is going to play,” Melvin said. “We wouldn’t have him here if he wasn’t going to be an everyday player. Since he actually had an OPS 200 points higher against left-handed pitching in Triple-A, the Diamondbacks might as well give it a try. He should have some value in NL-only leagues.
Chipper Jones became Atlanta’s all-time hits leader by going 2-for-4 Saturday against the Padres. Jones overtook Dale Murphy with his 1,902nd career hit. Of course, he’s still well short of the Braves’ franchise record held by Hank Aaron. One of Jones’ hits tonight was a double, extending his streak of games with an extra-base hit to 13. The major league record is 14, established by Paul Waner in 1927. Jones will try to keep it going against Jake Peavy on Sunday.
Brandon Webb prevailed in a matchup of All-Stars by striking out a season-high 10 in seven shutout innings Saturday against the Brewers. He outdueled Chris Capuano, who was pulled in the fourth with the Brewers’ down 8-0. Webb has allowed just two runs in 23 innings during July, dropping his ERA to 2.52. He finished May at 2.01, but a rough June followed, something that likely cost him the start in the All-Star Game.
Ronny Paulino hit a walk-off, RBI single with one out in the ninth inning to give the Pirates a 7-6 win over the Nationals on Saturday. Jason Bay walked to start the ninth and Sean Casey followed with a single. Jose Hernandez then reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt off reliever Roy Corcoran. Jose Bautista then struck out for the innings first out, but Paulino came through with a liner to center to end the game. The win brings the Pirates to 32-60, one game ahead of the Royals for the league’s worst record.
Aaron Cook took a no-decision against the Reds on Saturday despite yielding just one run over seven innings of work. Cook gave up six hits and walked three while striking out three. Cook has posted an impressive 3.59 ERA in 19 starts for the Rockies this season. Some poor run support and help from the bullpen means he’s left with an uninspiring 6-7 record, but Cook is having perhaps the best season ever for a Rockies pitcher. The only other Colorado starter to post an ERA under 4.00 while qualifying for the ERA title was Joe Kennedy, who posted a 3.66 in 2002.
