Overnight Dispatches
Kerry Wood will visit medical experts in New York next week before deciding whether to have surgery on his torn rotator cuff, according to the Chicago Tribune. Wood is leaning toward letting the injury heal without surgery.
Mark Mulder (shoulder) did some light throwing drills from the mound Friday. “His inflammation and his irritation have subsided,” trainer Barry Weinberg said. “He’s not working through the stages of returning to pitching, through the pitching plan. It’s not a rehab for the injury as much as a pitching plan to get his techniques and mechanics and arm strength for throwing back.”
Chipper Jones hit his 12th and 13th homers in the Braves’ win over the Padres on Friday. The All-Star break didn’t cool off Chipper. He’s 17-for-32 with five homers and 14 RBI in eight games during July.
Adrian Gonzalez drove in four runs in his first career two-homer game Friday against the Braves. Both homers came off Tim Hudson. Gonzalez has four homers in four games and is up to 15 in the season. It’s certainly more power than we expected him to exhibit in Petco Park. The homers tonight were his fourth and fifth in 163 at-bats at home.
The Diamondbacks are expected to call up Stephen Drew to take over at shortstop for the injured Craig Counsell. Drew will probably start against righties, with Damion Easley handling shortstop chores versus lefties. Drew hasn’t done a lot offensively since April, but he is worth picking up in NL-only leagues with Counsell done for three to six weeks. If the 23-year-old plays well enough, Counsell might not get his job back.
Johnny Estrada hit a walkoff homer off Derrick Turnbow after Luis Gonzalez doubled to start the bottom of the ninth, giving the Diamondbacks an 8-7 victory over the Brewers on Friday. Arizona’s fourth straight victory. Estrada had about as good of an All-Star case as any NL catcher. He’s batting .318/.340/.478 with 47 RBI in 245 at-bats. Mike Piazza, who drove in four runs in Friday’s game, ranks second among NL catchers with 41 RBI.
Adam Dunn went 2-for-4 with his 29th homer as the Reds’ No. 2 hitter on Friday. We’re not sure what more Dunn has to do to get manager Jerry Narron just to leave him in the second spot in the order. He’s batting .340 with five homers and 13 RBI in 12 games there. Still, he hit fourth and fifth the previous two games.
Jose Reyes (finger) took infield practice Friday after hitting on Thursday. “The main thing for him is to get over how he feels when he catches the ball, line drives and all that stuff,” manager Willie Randolph said. “Once he gets over that, who knows, he might be playing (Saturday).”
Phillies activated catcher Mike Lieberthal from the 15-day disabled list. The Phillies are still without Sal Fasano, so Carlos Ruiz hangs around for now. Chris Coste probably won’t see much time behind the plate in the future.
