Overnight Dispatches
Jeff Kent said his abdominal strain felt OK while hitting in the batting cages before yesterday’s game. However, he felt pain after taking batting practice and missed his fourth straight game, according to the LA Times. It’s not clear if he will be able to return to action this weekend. “I’m right on the teeter,” Kent said. “I’m on the edge of making a decision to play. You try to weigh that against being stupid and playing and hurting it worse. I’m right there.”
Jeff DaVanon hit a two-run homer and walked Friday in the Diamondbacks’ 4-3 win over the Rockies. DaVanon replaced Craig Counsell as the leadoff hitter tonight and might see more time in that role, though he’s not going to be a full-time player. He’s hitting .284/.367/.438 in 169 at-bats this season.
Jose Reyes won’t play this weekend after getting seven stitches to close a cut on his left pinkie sustained in Friday’s game. His availability for the All-Star Game is in question. “The doctor says `Let’s see how it feels in the next couple of days,’” Reyes said. With Reyes sidelined, the Mets will likely use Chris Woodward at short and Jose Valentin at second in both games on Saturday. A callup of Anderson Hernandez can’t be ruled out, but they’re not going to want to bump a pitcher to make room for him.
Chipper Jones homered and singled to drive in three runs against the Reds tonight. A foot injury almost sent Jones to the DL, but he’s responded by belting three homers and driving in 11 runs in five games since. He’s batting .309 with 11 homers and 50 RBI in 70 games overall.
Adrian Gonzalez homered and singled twice as the Padres defeated the Nationals 3-2 on Friday. That Gonzalez, never thought to have much home run power, has even 12 homers while playing half his games at Petco Park is surprising. Nine of those blasts have indeed come on the road, leaving him with a slugging percentage that is almost 100 points lower while at home. The left-hander hit .330 with six homers in June, so he can be used while hot in shallower NL-only formats.
