Overnight Dispatches
The Giants still expect to activate Moises Alou from the disabled list today, according to the Contra Costa Times. “Hopefully I can produce right away,” said Moises Alou on Wednesday. “I expect myself to do that. If I don’t, I’ll be disappointed. … I felt good today. Hopefully I’ll wake up feeling good tomorrow.” He’s been out with a strained lower back.
Even though Jeff Kent said his strained oblique muscle had improved enough to play last night, he was a late scratch from the game, according to the LA Times. It’s not clear exactly when he’ll be back in the mix, though it appears the Dodgers are playing it safe with Kent
Geoff Jenkins went 3-for-5 and snapped a career-long 142 at-bat homerless streak Wednesday against the Reds. Jenkins finally hit his eighth homer of the year in the 10th inning off Todd Coffey. He also had a great catch in the ninth to prevent the Reds from taking a lead. He’s 9-for-17 so far in July.
Chuck James moved to 3-0 by allowing four runs over six innings Wednesday against the Cardinals. Thanks to plenty of run support against Jeff Suppan, James became the first Braves rookie in 23 years to win his first three starts. The left-hander gave up homers to Scott Rolen and Hector Luna tonight, but that’s going to happen. Since he’s a flyball pitcher, he’ll probably do worse in ERA than WHIP going forward.
Khalil Greene hit a three-run homer off Tom Gordon in the top of the ninth to lead the Padres to a 6-3 win over the Phillies on Wednesday. Two of the runs were charged to Arthur Rhodes. The Padres beat the Phillies for the first time in their last 12 contests. Greene also singled, raising his average to .231. It’s the highest he’s been in exactly a month.
Chipper Jones started Wednesday after a specialist found inflammation and no tear in his ailing right foot. Jones will play through the soreness, though he might miss games from time to time. If it’s bad enough, the Braves could even shut him down in September, seeing as how they’re probably not going to be in contention. “I’ve done everything, I’ve just got some bad feet,” Jones said. “I’m going to have to deal with it.”
Padres activated outfielder Dave Roberts from the 15-day disabled list. Roberts is playing left field and batting leadoff against the Phillies tonight.
