Overnight Dispatches
The Giants likely will activate Moises Alou from the disabled list in time for Thursday’s game, according to the Contra Costa Times. He tested his strained lower back by taking batting a fielding practice on Tuesday. “I feel good now, walking around, and I expect to feel good on the field.” Alou said, though he added, “You never know what’s going to happen out there.
The Dodgers made Jeff Kent a late scratch from Tuesday’s game after he aggravated an abdominal muscle on his left side during batting practice, according to the LA Times. Kent initially felt the soreness during Monday’s game. “It feels more like a cramp,” said Kent. “I’m concerned enough to rest it.” Kent said he might be able to play today.
Dave Roberts (knee) rejoined the Padres on Tuesday, but he wasn’t activated from the disabled list with the club facing left-hander Cole Hamels. Roberts is expected to be in left field for Wednesday’s game.
Mike Lieberthal plans to test his strained left hip by running tomorrow, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. If all goes well, Lieberthal plans to begin a rehab assignment this weekend.
Johnny Estrada was scheduled to have Tuesday off already, but he needed the rest after tweaking a pulled groin during Monday’s contest, according to the Arizona Republic. Manager Bob Melvin said the injury isn’t serious, and Estrada could be back in action this evening
Doug Davis, who missed his last start with a sore lower back, evened his record at 5-5 by going 8 2/3 innings in the Brewers’ 5-2 win over the Reds on Tuesday. Scott Hatteberg’s homer in the seventh gave the Reds their only runs. Davis nearly had the complete game, but two men reached with two on in the ninth, causing manager Ned Yost to bring in Brian Shouse to face Hatteberg as the tying run. Hatteberg flied out to end the game. Davis will get the Cubs in his remaining start before the break, so he’s worth using in all formats.
Stephen Drew went 2-for-4 with a homer, four RBI and a walk Monday for Triple-A Tucson. Drew had a rough June and is currently hitting .286/.343/.453 in 329 at-bats. The Diamondbacks still might trade Craig Counsell to make room for him, but Counsell’s struggles have reduced his trade value and Drew isn’t applying the same kind of pressure he did in May.
