Overnight Dispatches
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that the MRI on Chipper Jones revealed a partial tear of the plantar plate in his right foot and a strained medial collateral ligament. Jones will be available to pinch-hit tonight but will meet with a foot specialist on Wednesday. “They think it’s best if we take another day, or two if needed, and calm it back down,” said Jones. “With the pounding of being out there for nine innings, we could have a setback. Team spokesman Brad Hainje said the injury is similar to but not as severe as the one Jones had in his left foot last season when he missed 37 games. Jones, who said he was feeling better today, also has an inflamed MCL in his right knee.
The Giants are expected to decide on Tuesday that they will keep Moises Alou (back) on the disabled list until after the All-Star break. This is probably the best decision the Giants can make regarding Alou. At 40 he no longer heals quickly and the extra time off the All-Star break provides might enable him to stay off the disabled list for a little longer when he returns.
Juan Cruz was pulled after giving up four runs in three innings against the Dodgers Monday in his return from the DL. Cruz gave up three runs in the first, and three singles led to one more run in the third. The Diamondbacks won’t be making a switch based on his struggles in his first start back. He’ll get the Rockies at Coors this weekend.
Carlos Marmol gave up four runs and walked seven in 4 1/3 innings Monday in a loss to the Astros. A strong performance last week against the Brewers earned Marmol a longer stay in the rotation, but he belongs in middle relief if he belongs in the majors at all. Angel Guzman could take his rotation spot after the All-Star break.
Ronny Paulino had three hits, including his third homer, and three runs scored Monday against the Mets. Paulino hit .308 in June, but that resulted in just one homer, four runs scored, seven RBI and no steals in 78 at-bats. He already has four runs scored and four RBI in three games this month. That manager Jim Tracy keeps on playing him at least six days a week will likely result in some fatigue later this season, but he’s hitting pretty well at the moment.
Khalil Greene bruised his triceps when he was hit in the arm by a pitch during Saturday night’s game. Greene was unavailable for Sunday, but he expects to return to the lineup on Monday.
