Overnight Dispatches

From Rotoworld, Rototimes:

The Padres are expected to activate Dave Roberts from the disabled list on Tuesday, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. He’s been out of action with a badly bruised right knee. Roberts is playing for Single-A Lake Elsinore tonight. His return will probably put Ben Johnson back in the minors. The Padres don’t have room for the extra outfielder while carrying three catchers.

The Giants aren’t expected to activate Moises Alou until at least Wednesday, according to the Contra Costa Times. He’s on the disabled list with a strained lower back. Alou says his back feels better, but he still isn’t able to participate in baseball activities. He is likely still another week from being ready to be activated from the disabled list.

As expected, the Diamondbacks will activate Juan Cruz from the disabled list to start tonight’s game, according to the Arizona Republic. Cruz has been out with a sore shoulder. “It’s good to have him back,” manager BoB Melvin said. NL-only leaguers will probably want him active, especially since he’ll get two starts this week. The Diamondbacks didn’t say whether Edgar Gonzalez would be sent down to make room for Cruz. If he stays, he’ll be a middle reliever.

Khalil Greene bruised his left triceps when he was hit by a pitch during Saturday night’s game and missed Sunday’s contest as a result, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. He’s expected to return to action on Tuesday.

Mark Mulder has shown improvement in his recovery from a shoulder impingement, so he’s been cleared for an increase in exercise, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. However, he won’t begin playing catch until the weekend, and it could be another few weeks before he’s ready to pitch in a game.

Chipper Jones, who didn’t start Sunday because of a sore foot, hit a three-run homer as a pinch-hitter against the Orioles. That’s encouraging. It was Jones’ first ever pinch-hit homer. He’s still set to have his sore foot examined on Monday. The official Braves website reports that Chipper Jones is experiencing some of the same discomfort in his foot that caused him to go on the disabled list for six weeks last season. Jones will visit a foot specialist on Monday and have X-rays taken.

Brandon Webb is an NL All-Star. His name was mistakenly left off MLB.com’s original list. That’s better. Webb was in line to start the game before some of his recent struggles. That won’t happen now, but he’s still very deserving of a spot.

Brandon Webb threw a complete game while allowing just one run against the Athletics on Sunday in a 3-1 Diamondbacks’ victory. The lone run scored on a Frank Thomas homer as Webb struck out seven and walked just one. The win was Webb’s ninth of the season, but just his first since May 26. The complete game was his third of the season and the sixth of his career. The right-hander hadn’t pitched as well in his three previous interleague matchups, so it was encouraging to see him bounce back today.
