Overnight Dispatches
It appears that the save recored by Jeremy Accardo on Friday was a one time thing. Armando Benitez returned to action on Saturday and pitched a scoreless 10th inning against the Padres to earn his seventh save. Benitez missed a week with a sprained elbow. His velocity wasn’t quite there tonight, but his slider looked good while he retiring three of the four hitters he faced.
Giants manager Felipe Alou said that Moises Alou probably won’t be activated from the disabled list when eligible on Monday, according to the San Jose Mercury News. “He didn’t take batting practice yesterday and didn’t go on the field, so I don’t think he’ll play two days from now,” Alou said of his son, who’s recovering from a strained lower back.
Although all signs point to Juan Cruz coming off the disabled list to start Monday’s game, Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin still hasn’t made a formal announcement, according to the Arizona Republic. Cruz has been sidelined by shoulder soreness and likely would replace Edgar Gonzalez on their roster.
In his season debut, Tom Gorzelanny yielded two runs in five innings and struck out six against the Tigers on Saturday. Gorzelanny gave up six hits and walked three, so he wasn’t particularly sharp. Still, he gave the Pirates a chance to win, and they scored seven runs after he left to prevail 9-2. Gorzelanny will get the Mets in his next start. It should be OK to use him in NL-only leagues.
The Mets have hired Rickey Henderson to tutor Jose Reyes for the next two weeks on the art of base stealing. Learning from the best won’t hurt Reyes. He currently has 34 stolen bases, but he has been thrown out nine times.
Adrian Gonzalez had a go-ahead two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to help the Padres beat the Giants 7-4 in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader. Gonzalez also had an RBI on a fielder’s choice in the fifth. All this comes after he had just eight RBI while hitting .330 with six homers in June.
Kerry Wood (shoulder) will play catch Sunday, the first time he will be allowed to throw since he underwent an MRI on his right shoulder on June 26. Wood won’t return to the mound for at least another week, suggesting that a return before the end of the month is unlikely.
