Overnight Dispatches
Although Juan Cruz had a productive bullpen session on Friday, Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin wasn’t ready to announce whether Cruz will start Monday’s game, according to the Arizona Republic. Melvin wants to see how Cruz’s shoulder responds today before making a final decision on when the pitcher will be activated from the disabled list.
After testing his sprained elbow with a bullpen session Friday, Armando Benitez was cleared for game action, according to the Contra Costa Times. “This was pretty much about as hard as you can throw in the bullpen, so he’s definitely available,” trainer Stan Conte said.
Matt Wise had no residual problems with his cut finger after pitching Thursday and was available Friday, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. “He’s fine,” manager Ned Yost said. “His finger looks good.
Dave Roberts tested his badly bruised right knee by going through a full pregame workout yesterday, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. “Today was a good day,” he said. “I feel OK. It was an important day. My legs felt good.” He’s expected to take part in a two-game rehab assignment beginning today and come off the disabled list Tuesday or Wednesday
Doug Davis, who missed his turn Thursday because of a sore lower back, said he was on schedule to return for his turn on Tuesday. Davis was scheduled to throw in the bullpen Friday night and said he would let manager Ned Yost know that he was available for some bullpen duty Saturday night should the need arise. Geremi Gonzalez will return to his middle relief role.
Adam Dunn hit a walk-off grand slam off Indians closer Bob Wickman in the bottom of the ninth inning on Friday. The Reds were down 7-0 through seven innings, but the Cleveland bullpen gave up four runs in the eighth and five in the ninth. Dunn has had back-to-back strong games from the second spot in the order, so maybe Jerry Narron will leave him there. It’s the best place for him, even against lefties.
Kip Wells was rocked again on Friday, this time giving up seven runs in just 2 1/3 innings against the Pirates. All seven batters Wells put on base came around to score tonight, but the right-hander isn’t pitching well enough to be asking for better luck. He’s got a 15.19 ERA in three starts for the Pirates this season, although he should get better the further he distances himself from surgery on a blocked artery. Still, he’s not someone that needs to be owned in NL-only leagues right now.
Chuck James recorded his second straight victory by limiting the Orioles to three runs over six innings of work tonight. James was making his second big league start and hadn’t allowed a run through the first five innings of work this evening. A pair of homers by Jeff Conine and Corey Patterson in the sixth drove in three runs to tie the game at 3-3, but the Braves added two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-3 lead. Chad Paronto, Ken Ray, and Jorge Sosa held the lead and thus afforded James the win. The two strong outings may get NL-only leaguers a little too excited about James, but he’s well worth using most weeks. Starting against the Cardinals next week may not be one of them, however.
