Overnight Dispatches
Johnny Estrada was moved all the way from seventh to second in the Diamondbacks’ batting order on Friday, according to the Arizona Republic. It’s not clear if manager Bob Melvin will stick with the move, though Estrada, who is hitting .311 on the season, was 1-for-4 on the night.
Juan Cruz probably won’t test his sore shoulder by playing catch until at least tomorrow, according to the Arizona Republic. He was slated to throw yesterday, but the Diamondbacks decided to proceed cautiously with Cruz and opted to hold him out of the session.
Kerry Wood should be ready to be activated from the disabled list next weekend, according to the Chicago Tribune. He’s out of action again due to his troublesome shoulder.
Adrian Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with a homer Friday in the Padres’ 5-4 win over the Angels. Gonzalez’s strong June continues. He’s hitting .375 with three homers and five doubles in 48 at-bats this month. Unfortunately, all that’s gotten him is five RBI, as neither Brian Giles nor Mike Piazza has been on base very often lately.
Chad Cordero took his second loss of the season after giving up two runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief Friday against the Yankees. It would have been interesting to see just how things would have played out if manager Frank Robinson had brought in Cordero to protect a two-run lead at the start of the eighth. Instead, Gary Majewski entered and gave up four hits to blow the lead, with Mike Stanton and Cordero getting big outs to preserve the tie. Cordero then allowed two runs in the ninth. As little work as Cordero has had lately, he should have been able to handle a two-inning save. He had made one appearance in seven days, that coming in a blowout loss.
Aaron Heilman took the loss after giving up four runs in an inning of relief Friday against the Orioles. Perhaps not coincindently, Heilman has struggled mightily since the Mets again declined to put him into the rotation last month. He has a 12.34 ERA in 11 2/3 innings since May 23. Up until that point, he was one of the five- or 10-best relievers in baseball.
