Overnight Dispatches
The Braves will likely recall Chuck James from Triple-A Richmond to take the injured John Thomson’s spot in the rotation, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. James, who made seven relief appearances for the Braves before straining a hamstring in early May, holds an ERA of 2.36 in 26 2/3 innings as a starter for Triple-A Richmond, striking out 23 and walking just four in the process.
Khalil Greene received a routine day off Thursday after starting 46 games in a row, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. He is hitting just .211 on the year and is hitless in his list 20 at-bats
Kip Wells (shoulder surgery) allowed six hits and three earned runs in 7 1/3 innings during a rehab start for Double-A Altoona on Thursday. Wells is expected to make his third, and maybe final, minor league rehab start for Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday. If the Triple-A start goes well he could join the Pirates’ rotation on June 25 against Los Angeles
An MRI taken Thursday on Juan Cruz‘s shoulder showed nothing structurally wrong with his right shoulder. Cruz, who soreness in his right shoulder after a bullpen session, will likely make a minor league rehab start on Monday or Tuesday and if pain-free could join the Diamondbacks’ rotation around June 24.
Jeff Kent went 3-for-4 with a triple, a double and two RBI in the win over the Padres on Thursday. Brian Giles was slow getting over to Kent’s drive to the right-center gap in the ninth, giving the second baseman his first triple since 2004. Kent is 5-for-12 in three games since coming off the DL.
Triple-A Indianapolis’ Tom Gorzelanny allowed two hits in seven scoreless innings and struckt out 10 on Wednesday. With Kip Wells coming back at the end of the month, it doesn’t look like Gorzelanny’s opportunity will come before the All-Star break. It’s too bad, because he could be a useful starter for the Pirates and NL-only leaguers right now.
