Overnight Dispatches
The Giants activated Moises Alou from the 15-day disabled list prior to Tuesday’s game against the Marlins. Alou went 1-for-3 with an RBI in the 2-1 win. He had been sidelined since early May with a sprained right ankle.
After sitting out Monday’s game with a slight concussion, Geoff Jenkins returned with a bang on Tuesday, going 4-for-4 in the Brewers’ 5-3 win. Jenkins suffered the injury colliding with teammate Prince Fielder while chasing a pop fly during Sunday’s game. He was in an 0-for-15 slump before leaving Sunday’s game.
Kerry Wood was pulled after allowing four runs — one earned — in 3 2/3 innings Tuesday against the Astros. Wood didn’t complain of additional soreness after the game, though he admitted he wasn’t quite right. “My slider just wasn’t really sharp today,” he said. “It was just a get-me-over slider rather than a real one.” It’s likely only a matter of time until Wood returns to the DL, even if it’s just for a couple of weeks.
Juan Cruz has been put on the disabled list with a sore shoulder. Cruz said he felt the shoulder soreness while playing catch on Monday. Dustin Nippert will be recalled from Triple-A to start on Wednesday. Cruz will have his shoulder examined on Wednesday, but it is currently believe to just be a strain. Cruz was scratched from his scheduled start on Tuesday night against the Phillies due to the soreness. Russ Ortiz, who was scheduled to start Wednesday, was activated from the disabled list to start Tuesday’s game instead.
Mike Lieberthal was not in the lineup Tuesday, one day after injuring his hip running to second after hitting the game-winning hit in Monday’s 4-3 win over the Diamondbacks. It is unclear at this time whether Lieberthal will need a stint on the DL. “I can’t swing a bat today,” Lieberthal said Tuesday. “I feel like I pulled something. It’s just a matter of how bad it was.” Lieberthal is expected to miss a few days while he rests, and Sal Fasano will start while Lieberthal is out. The Phillies hope that with rest he will avoid yet another trip to the disabled list.
Jose Reyes was a late scratch on Tuesday because of a sore right wrist, according to the AP. X-rays showed no break in the wrist. Chris Woodward replaced Reyes at shortstop in the starting lineup.
