Overnight Dispatches

From RotoWorld:

Danys Baez won’t be pulled from the closer’s role after blowing his fourth straight save chance on Saturday. “Danny will keep getting the ball in that situation,” manager Grady Little said. “Hopefully the results will start getting better for him. We still have a lot of confidence in him.” Maybe that’s the case, but the Dodgers have to be eagerly awaiting Eric Gagne’s return.

After experiencing pain while running Saturday, Mike Lieberthal was sent back to Philadelphia for an MRI on his left knee. Lieberthal indicated Friday that he expected to return when eligible next Saturday. That might not happen now.

Aaron Cook pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up one run Saturday in a victory over the Astros. At 4-3 with a 3.27 ERA, Cook is pitching like an All-Star. He’s 3-0 in his four road starts, but he has a 2.79 ERA at Coors Field and a 3.81 mark elsewhere.

Rich Aurilia has been taking batting practice and should be ready to come off the disabled list when he’s eligible on Friday. Aurilia has been out since May 3 with a strained right groin.

Jeff DaVanon, who has been troubled by a sore back, might get a start on Sunday or Monday. DaVanon has been limited since Monday. Fortunately, his back problems have coincided with Eric Byrnes’ resurgence. He’s not going to resume playing regularly anytime soon.

J.J. Hardy is sitting out a second straight game on Saturday night and isn’t expected back on the lineup on Sunday. “We just played good with Billy [Hall] at short last night and we’ll put him in there tonight,” manager Ned Yost said. “J.J.’s struggling a little bit and we’ll give him a day or two to back off. We’ll get him back in there after the off-day [on Monday], maybe. Sooner or later.” Well, that clears things right up. Hardy has started better this year than he did in 2005. The Brewers aren’t giving up on him.

Armando Benitez was credited with a victory after pitching a scoreless ninth inning against the Dodgers on Saturday. Benitez entered with the Giants down by three runs, but the club came back off Danys Baez in the bottom of the ninth. While Benitez hasn’t gotten much work because of the lack of save situations in San Francisco, he has picked up two wins in his last four appearances.

The Cubs are planning to have Kerry Wood (shoulder) make his season debut Thursday against the Nationals. While he didn’t have his best stuff last night, Wood indicated there was no pain in his shoulder during his rehab start. “Physically, I feel pretty good,” Wood said. “I think it’ll progress. I don’t think we’ll be throwing 120, 130 [pitches] this year but it’ll keep going as long as I keep pitching.” Wood is scheduled for a side session on Sunday.
