Overnight Dispatches
From RotoWorld:
Prince Fielder left Sunday’s game in the fourth inning due to groin tightness. Jeff Cirillo took over at first base. The Brewers would probably recall Corey Hart if Fielder is going to be unavailable for more than a couple of days.
Aaron Cook picked up his third win of the season by holding the Astros to two runs in eight-plus innings on Sunday. Cook left with runners on first and second with nobody out in the ninth of a 5-1 game. Closer Brian Fuentes allowed one of the two inherited runners to score, leaving Cook’s ERA at an impressive 3.51. He’ll get the Astros again later this week at Minute Maid Park and is 9-1 with a 3.33 ERA in his last 15 road starts.
Khalil Greene went 4-for-4 with four RBI and a stolen base as the Padres defeated the Cubs 6-3 on Sunday. Greene has five homers and 20 RBI to go with four steals, but 12 runs scored and a .226 average through 30 games are below expectations.
Kerry Wood (shoulder) struck out 12 in five scoreless innings during his rehab start for low Single-A Peoria on Saturday. Wood gave up one hit, walked one and hit a batter in a 70-pitch outing. He touched 97 mph on the radar gun. “I probably have got one more (minor league appearance), and then I’ll be ready to go,” he said. “I feel good and I’ve been recovering pretty well. I just need to get that pitch count up there and be able to go deep into games.” If all goes well, Wood will return to the rotation on May 17. Rich Hill would likely head back to the minors then.
Adam Dunn went 2-for-4 with a homer and five RBI as the Diamondbacks defeated the Reds 9-8 on Sunday. The homer was his 12th and the five RBI ties a career high. Dave Weathers earned his ninth save despite yielding one run and putting the tying run on base. The Reds are an NL Central best 21-11.
Johnny Estrada, who tweaked a quad injury yesterday and wasn’t supposed to play today, appeared as a pinch-hitter and stayed in to play catcher against the Reds on Sunday. Estrada struck out in his first at-bat and then lined into a double play with the tying run on first in a 9-8 game in the bottom of the ninth. Perhaps manager Bob Melvin should have stuck to his word and given Estrada a full day off.
Moises Alou will have an MRI exam Tuesday to assess his sprained right ankle. “The swelling is down to just bad now, as opposed to what it was,” trainer Stan Conte said. “It has improved in the last 24 hours. That’s good, but that doesn’t mean a whole lot.” Alou went on the disabled list prior to Saturday’s game.
Gary Majewski has tendinitis in his right shoulder, but he was available to pitch on Sunday. Majewski said he has been bothered by the soreness for the past two or three weeks. He hasn’t pitched in a game since Wednesday.
