Overnight Dispatches
From RotoWorld:
Jose Reyes went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles as the Mets beat the Braves 6-5 on Saturday. The Mets are now 5-3 against the Braves, even though Atlanta has outscored them by three runs. Reyes is a big reason why the Mets have won five times. He’s batting .375 with seven walks in 32 at-bats against the Braves. He’s at .250 with six walks in 100 at-bats versus everyone else.
Giants placeed outfielder Moises Alou on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right ankle. The Giants won’t have a guess on how much time Alou will miss until after the swelling goes down in the ankle he hurt Saturday night. Steve Finley will play regularly for the next couple of weeks. Since he’s batting right behind Barry Bonds in the lineup, he could be an asset in mixed leagues for the short-term.
Astros manager Phil Garner wants to give Brad Lidge two days off after having him pitch the last four days. Garner should have given his closer Friday off. Dan Wheeler and Chad Qualls are the candidates for save chances while Lidge gets a breather.
Mark Mulder surrendered three runs in six innings Saturday in a win over the Marlins. With his back causing him some problems, Mulder was mediocre again tonight. He gave up six hits, walked three and struck out one. Mulder has had a rather easy schedule to date, but he’s sporting a 4.44 ERA.
Johnny Estrada had three doubles and scored two of the Diamondbacks’ three runs in Saturday’s victory. Estrada’s average is up to .321. He’s 22-for-57 (.387) since a 3-for-21 start. Estrada tweaked a quad injury while hitting three doubles Saturday and won’t play Sunday. He was likely sit out against the left-hander anyway. “He’s got that upper quad and every time he hits a ball in the gap it seems to be barking on him,” Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. “It seems like just when it gets better, he hits another ball in the gap.” Estrada is expected back after Monday’s off day.
Danys Baez blew a third straight save after giving up a run in the ninth inning Saturday against the Brewers. The middle blown save was hardly his fault, but with five earned runs allowed in his last 3 1/3 innings, Baez isn’t pitching very well at the moment. Overall, he’s 8-for-12 in save chances. The Dodgers won’t even think about moving him out of the closer’s role until Eric Gagne comes back.
